She’d crossed half the freaking galaxy and her date was still obsessed with his phone.

Zoe snuck glances at Asher, hoping that maybe she’d catch his eye and knock a bit of shame into him. Sure, this was supposed to be a fake relationship, but shouldn’t they be putting on a show? Wasn’t her fake fiancé supposed to at least pretend to like her?

She heaved a sigh and dug into her food. It looked delicious, but there was a strange aftertaste she couldn’t quite kick. Asher had explained that they relied on food processors to artificially replicate flavors, but the taste buds could never be completely fooled.

This was the third dinner she’d had with him in the roped off section of the cafeteria, and the rest of the compound’s staff hadn’t completely lost interest. But they weren’t staring quite as much.

“If you need to go take care of something, I’d understand.” Her meal was almost done, but Asher had barely touched his plate. Zoe made a mental note to mention it to Remy in the hopes that someone fed her fake-betrothed. She didn’t want him to real-starve.

Asher set his device down and looked at her, blinking several times as if he had forgotten she was there. “What?”

If this was a real date, she’d be insulted by now. She tried not to take it personally and considered this her good deed for the century. She didn’t want some poor, unsuspecting alien dragon woman to end up with a workaholic who couldn’t even spare a minute to fake a conversation.

He had the grace to look sheepish, something she didn’t realize dragons could do. “I apologize. I’m being an ass.”

“A little bit.” She gave him a smile, hoping to soften the blow.

“How have you been finding the compound since…” He trailed off, clearly unsure of the polite way to phrase it.

“Since I stopped deluding myself that I was in a video game and accepted the totally reasonable fact that I’m halfway across the galaxy and talking to a man-dragon?” Saying it didn’t make it feel any more real.

“I’m not sure it’s halfway,” he said before digging into his meal.

The absurdity of the thing startled a laugh out of her. But the reality had her sobering quickly. “The compound is…” She wasn’t sure how to answer. Whatever the distance, she was on another freaking planet and should be soaking up the experience for all it was worth. Instead she was kind of bored. “There’s not much to do here.”

He wasn’t offended by the admission. “We’ll begin building the city once a sufficient amount of territory has—” Asher’s communicator beeped and he made a face. “I’m sorry, I need to check this.”

Zoe just shrugged. She picked at
